Math Class Guidelines:

The junior high math classroom is structured to ensure success for each student.  Students are assigned homework daily and are expected to complete it diligently prior to the next class meeting.  A typical math class period will include the completion of a warm-up exercise, correction and questions on the previous night’s homework, samples (problems similar to the homework to clarify or reinforce the previous night’s lesson), a daily quiz, accelerated math practice or test sheets, and presentation of a new lesson/concept with guided practice problems completed in class to assist with the understanding and completion of the current night’s homework.  7th grade students are exposed to and are provided multiple opportunities to master the 7th grade California State math standards (Pre-Algebra).  8th grade students are exposed to and are provided multiple opportunities to master 8th grade California State math standards (Algebra 1).  Students complete chapter projects that summarize the major concepts, procedures and structures presented in each chapter.  Warm-up exercises spiral previously presented material in order to reinforce, retain and critically respond to important grade-level concepts.  A summative test is given at the end of each year in the junior high to assess the degree to which each student has mastered pre-algebra (7th grade) concepts and Algebra 1 (8th grade) concepts.  Students who demonstrate mastery of Algebra 1 standards at the end of 8th grade are ready to take either High School Geometry or Algebra 2 (Advanced Algebra) upon high school entrance.
